but his son is no fool. the boys will is not broken.

he will be waiting for his chance to break free all he needs is a movement.

the old hunting rifle will take precious seconds to reload.

he will get off one, perhaps two shots before the russians zero in and turn their automatic weapons on him.

so be it. he lays his life willingly.

for his son. for desan.

*POW*

he is unaware of having pulled the trigger.

there is no conscious decision. only instinct. necessity.

body and rifle. thought and action become one.

the sum of his experience. the span of his years. focused down to a crossed coin of leaf-filtered sunlight.

something moves. it goes down.

again. and again.

aim. fire. reload.

aim. fire. reload.

relentless.

until there are no more rounds, and the reality of it comes crashing down on him–

and he knows that this is the moment of his death.

he will not go gently.
